Reading Habits Tag

I figured since you all know next to nothing about me, why don't I share my reading habits with you? Nobody tagged me but then that's my case for all the tags so let's just storm on ahead. If you've done the tag already then you can leave a link to that post in the comments because I'd love to check out your answers!

1. Do you have a certain place at home for reading?
Usually in my bed which is why my sidetable looks like a cluttered unholy mess. Will Herondale would probably cry blood if he ever saw this so I better clean it up and put these books on the shelves where they belong...

2. Bookmark or random piece of paper?
Bookmarks. All the bookmarks. And by bookmarks I mean printed freebies collected from artsy blogs over the years and stuck to the backs of cereal box cardboard. No one will ever know the truth...unless they turn the bookmark around...

3. Can you just stop reading or do you have to stop after a chapter / a certain amount of pages?
I can't stop in the middle of nowhere or I'll have only have a vague memory of what happened before. Stopping at the start of a new chapter gives closure.

4. Do you eat or drink while reading?
A lot. I bring books with me down to my lonely dawn breakfasts, lunches at college, dinners with my family (sorry, Mom!). I especially have tea or ice cream or chocolates with me when it's not meal time but I still want to snack while reading. The more anxious I am for the characters, the greater the chance that I'm eating something.

5. Multitasking: music or TV while reading?
I just cannot focus on 2 things at once while reading, which is why audiobooks are not for me. Even faint classical music gets me distracted or pulls me out of the story if it clashes with the words. Pro Tip: Shadowhunters fighting demons does not fit well with Bach.

6. One book at a time or several at once?
Several at once. If one book gets pretty boring, then I always exchange it for another one and get back to the first one later. Juggling books is the secret to why I take forever to finish books.

7. Reading at home or everywhere?
Preferably, at home in peace but I don't have trouble reading in the bus. (Except for the fact that I'm really hyper-aware of the people staring at me.)

8. Reading out loud or silently in your head?
Silently but if the book is dragging, I read aloud to focus more on the words.

9. Do you read ahead or skip pages?
Never! But I do skim if I'm debating whether or not to DNF a book.

10. Breaking the spine or keeping it like new?
Nothing good comes from breaking spines. All you end up with is loose pages.

11. Do you write in your books?
Sometimes but usually I'm too lazy or caught up in the story to do so.

12. Who do you tag?
Everyone! But especially Gee @ TeaAndBookReviews ~

So, what reading habits do you guys have? What do you think of my bookish photos too? They're all from my bookstagram, which is where I first started sharing my love for books online :") P.S. Ramadan Kareem to all you Muslim bloggers out there. (sorry I put pictures of food even though we start fasting from today eep! I did not intend to torture!)

  1. One of the first things I noticed about your blog when I first visited was your scrolling list of currently reading, it's quite impressive! I'm strictly a one-book woman myself, but I think when I restrict myself to reading one book at a time it gets really hard (and high-pressure) to choose my next read -- I bet it's a lot easier for you! :)

    1. Haha, yes I've gotten too used to juggling books and I think it's because I'm a huge mood-reader. Definitely easier but takes longer to finish a single book.

  2. I really want to do this tag! whoa, you take beautiful pictures :) I listen to music while I read sometimes... I can't really concentrate with the TV unless I'm so absorbed by the book. I like to keep my books new, I hate breaking the spine ! Nice post :)

    3. YES THE CHARACTERS ARE MY BABIES!! I love how Krista & Becca Ritchie write their relationships like none of them would be the same if they hadn't met each other!

  3. I love your blog, Ju! All my bookish pictures wind up on instagram as well, haah :D I LOVE ME SOME BOOKARKS. I even make my own from pretty scrapbookish stuffs :) Thanks for stopping by my blog!

    1. Thank you so much, Sarah! <3 Bookmarks make stopping reading and joining reality more easier that's for sure, otherwise I'd just feel empty haha

  4. I'm pretty much exactly the same as you for it all! Except I HAVE to have some type of noise, such as music (preferably) or a TV on to be able to focus when I read. It's a strange affliction, I know... I also read at the table, much to my parents chagrin. I may have to steal this tag...

    1. I actually think it's admirable that you can read with noise in the background because then you cna adaptively read anywhere, right? I'd love to see you do this tag!

  5. Your pictures are so pretty (but I already knew that since I found you through instagram). I never get tagged for anything either, oh well haha
I applaud you for your bookmark collection. I use scraps of paper or just turn the book upside down. I try to stop at the end of chapters, for the same reason you list, but sometimes other crap forces me to stop before I'd like. Life, sigh.

    1. Waaahh, thanks Madilyn! Life is ugh yes but bookmarks make stopping bearable so give them a try ;)

  6. Awesome post, these pictures are gorgeous! Your bookmarks are super cool too, I just have really plain free ones that I have acquired. So jealous that you can read multiple books at once! My memory is awful so I forget what I've been reading if I start another book. I can't multitask when reading, either. At least not anymore, I used to have to TV on, music playing, and be able to read but my focus isn't what it used to be.

    1. Thank you :") Mood-reading has made me a book juggler haha so it's strange that I can't multi-task but can multi-read...? Psychology is something.

  7. I want to do this tag! :) Thanks for doing this, since I've never heard of it before. I actually use bookmarks more, and I have a whole collection of them tucked away in my desk. I just love using bookmarks because they make my books look prettier! :) I sometimes end up losing some of them, which is sad. Like you, audiobooks can't work for me. Actually, watching YouTubers/BookTubers online are so difficult because I can't stand listening that long. I always get distracted eventually and end up doing something else while the audio is on, haha. Lovely tag! I can't wait to do this! :)

    1. Please do! I'd love to see your answers and your bookmarks :") I lose focus watching booktube videos too so I usually just watch fun videos like tags or interviews because reviews are way too long lol

  8. I'd love to say bookmarks to question #2 but I always end up losing them so I usually end up with nothing left to put in my books but tissues. I guess I'm still better than my mom who actually folds the corner of the book page. How can we be siblings is beyond me. Something else I'll never understand is why would anyone break the spine of the book? There are certain things I don't understand, physics, maths and why are people hurting their books? Your photos are so so SO gorgeous! I checked out your Insta as well and girl, I want your skills.
I don't remember if I ever did this tag (I probably should keep track of the tags I do) but if not I'm totally doing it now.
    Love all your answers. :)

    1. Aw, I used to lose them but then I started putting them in this decorated nutella jar haha

EXACTLY. Breaking the spine of a book may make it look well-loved and all that but it breaks the glue apart and makes the pages fall out?! You're pretty much tearing the book apart! Thank you so much for checking out my insta :"D

  9. Love this tag so much. I am all about eating and drinking when I read. I will also start to skim if I am not sure if I am going to DNF a book. By the way really awesome pictures!

    1. Thank you, Grace! Skimming could restore my will to read but otherwise, I never do it because spoilers everywhere!

  10. Wow, your photography is GORGEOUS. <3 <3 HAH. Shadowhuntes and Bach? Now that IS funny, and definitely doesn't mesh ;) I need SILENCE to read. Absolute silence, otherwise my brain just... ceases to function. This is a great tag--I haven't seen it around before. ^_^

    1. THANKS (≧◡≦) Same, I need pin-drop silence but that's almost impossible to find in a household of 3 brothers and parents who passionately argue about politics haha

  11. You and your photography, gaaah! Love em! I can't do several books at once, I easily forget, but sometimes I've got no other choice but to do so, especially if I'm rushing to finish ARCs. And I can't listen to music either. My attention span is that of a 5 year old hyped on sugar, lol.

    1. Omg, Blessie ❤ Ah yeah, reading ARCs and review copies are the main reason why I started juggling books too :O

  12. The bookmarks look soo cute! I think I'm going to make some of my own this week xD I spot Cake Rusk in your pictures with tea lol I eat those everyday which my mom hates, she's always trying to make me eat paratheys with antheys and what not. I usually read in my room as well, and I read several books at once too - awesome post, I haven't seen this tag around much <3 Benish | Feminist Reflections

    1. I eat bread rusks like an old person for breakfast because I have to rush to catch the bus and parathas take forever for me to make xD Ah, I wish I could link you to the post I saw this tag in but I forgot the blog name *insert embarrassed as heck emoji*

  13. I gathered up two things in particular from this post:
    a) WE ARE READING TWINS, and
    b) holy crap your photography is gorgeous.

    3. I also can't stop in the middle of nowhere. It'll make me terribly confused and I wouldn't know at which paragraph/line I stopped at, so I end up reading from the beginning of the chapter.
    4. I must eat EVERYWHERE. Then I eat with my left hand because I need my right one to flip pages.
    5. I can't multitask either! My attention span is way too short for that. Also audiobooks are not for me.
    8. I do that too. Eek.
    10. NO TO BENT SPINES. Nonono.

Okay so the only things we're different at are #9 (I like reading ahead... bwahaha!) and #11 (my writing is ugly and I don't want to ruin my books with it)!

    1. ME LONG LOST TWIN, WE CAN NOW RULE THE WORLD TOGETHER (if we have time because we still would wanna read then).

      Eating with my left hand is the only time in my life when I'm ambidextrous xD Bent spines are an insult to the art of bookbinding! Even if it's all machine-made now, I still feel like I'm slapping an ancient bookbinder in the face if I crack spines ;___;

  14. Ohhhh, your bookish photography is AMAZING. I don't know if I follow you on instagram yet, but after I finish comment, Imma go check because BOOK PHOTOGRAPHY LOVE. *stares at all your pictures for an unreasonably long time* Omg, and I'm the same. I can't multitask and read. I can do audio books and do other things, but actual reading?! I can't focus! I can barely focus if I'm in a noisy room! I like piece and quite and hot chocolate and snuggly quilts when I read.
Thanks for stopping by @ Paper Fury!

    1. THANK YOU, CAIT! I stare at your beautiful camera skills for an extremely long time too so you are not alone here ;)

People who can read in loud environments have some A++ adaptation skills. I grew up in a noisy house of 4 brothers but I'm still not used to reading in loud places, what a shame.

  15. Ahhh you take lovely photos! Especially the first one about bookmarks! You do have a lot of them xD anyway, I'm fully against breaking the spines as well. But my classmate broke the spine of one of my fave book and now I cannot re-read it freely .-. I hope you're fasting well! May Ramadan and Idul Fitri bring you and your family a lot of blessings!! ^^
